Removal and replacement of older cast-stone products has become an increasingly high priority in the construction industry. Concrete that does not comply with the stringent requirements of ASTM C 1364 is porous allowing water to penetrate the product. If the cast stone was manufactured with metal rebar, the rebar will rust and, ultimately, break the bond with the surrounding concrete. The metal rebar is then free to expand and contract causing spalling and deterioration of the cast stone. In addition to being unsightly, parts of the cast stone can break free and fall potentially causing property damage, personal injury or death.
Another focus of restoration is the replacement of moldings made from stucco-coated foam, an inexpensive and substandard substitute for cast stone. Foam moldings fail for a variety of reasons: vandalism, birds, weather and poor installation. In most instances, stucco coated foam products are NOT coated on the back of the product where it abuts the structure. Ultimately, water gets behind the stucco-coated foam product and saturates the unprotected foam accelerating its deterioration.

Replacement and restoration of important historical landmarks is an increasingly important aspect of the concrete restoration industry. In the historical replacement of architectural elements, there are two basic scenarios. First, the element still exists and we must use that element to maintain the historical integrity of the replacement. But, sometimes, the architectural element no longer exists and we must create the element from photographs or other historical documentation. We refer to this process as historical interpretation and work closely with architects, historical societies and municipalities to be sure we have capture the historical essence of the piece.
